Tarantulas belong to the order Araneae. The name
originated with the European wolf spider, Lycosa tarantula - family Lycosidae. It's bite
is not dangerous. American tarantulas belong to the family Theraphosidae. These are
large, hairy spiders that live in the southwestern United States, Central America, South
America, and other New World tropical regions. One large species of this group is the
Eurypelma californica. It's bite is painful, but reportedly not fatal to humans. |
