Heteropteryx dilatata

This insect blends in well with its jungle habitat in West Malaysia with its bright green flattened leaf-like body. Females are larger about 168 mm long. This species has many thorn-like spines all over its body, including the legs and head. Some of the spines can be as long as 10 mm. The wings are also very leaf-like with veins and brown areas representing dead spots of leaves. One has to look quite carefully to spot these insects on a plant. Stick insects feed on leaves such as guava, and some can be very specific in their association with one type of plant. Eggs take about 10 - 16 months to hatch in slightly damp conditions. The nymphs go through a series of molts getting bigger each time before becoming adults. In many species, the females lay fertile eggs without mating (parthenogenesis). In these species one male may occur for 4000 females. In some species the male is unknown or yet to be discovered.
